The sky is falling! The sky is falling!

Well perhaps it is. There are so many people out there in social media and in regular media doing everything in their power to raise the fear level in the general public. People it ain’t that bad!

Actually it is that bad. People all over the world are dying because of stupidity, greed and indifference. There’s enough in this world to be absolutely terrified about, but not everything. There are good people out there trying to fix the problems in the world. They can’t do their job without our support. Panic doesn’t help.

One the things that forced me to speak about this topic was a comment made by an individual who is running for the highest elected office in the United States. He has been spouting lies and half-truths to generate fear and hatred in his followers. Everyone has a right to their opinions and to speak their opinions in public. But when does it become fear mongering?

Fear mongering or scaremongering is the deliberate use of fear based tactics including exaggeration and usually repetition to influence the public in order to achieve a desired outcome.

Why can’t we just get along? I’m afraid of snakes. I am afraid of falling down a dark hole and never being found. These are legitimate fears. I don’t fear that my next-door neighbour is building a bomb because quite frankly neither of us is that smart. Just recently there was a takedown by police in a town less than an hour from me of a suspected terrorist, the home-grown variety. That is frightening. But I am not going to go around inciting fear and hatred because the guy had brown hair. I don’t know what colour his hair was. The point is, I trust the authorities to deal with the situation. I trust that those who know the situation best we’ll respond in the appropriate manner. Doesn’t help if I panic.

Is there some visceral thrill that people get out of fear mongering? If there is then they need more than help. I realize this is a bizarre concept but why don’t we just tell the truth. You don’t like somebody. Okay fine. You’re entitled. But don’t go around telling lies and trying to get people riled up about how evil this individual is because they don’t agree with you. All you are doing is taking us back the time of the Neanderthal. “Grunt, Grunt, Me want.” Seriously have we progressed so little? If we have become civilized then perhaps we need to prove it. Unfortunately words promote actions. Beware.

Hello. Such a good post from you. Most of us believe that the power of love is infinitely greater than the love of power. One sweet day, the world will get it right. And you are right in saying that we all have perfectly legitimate fears. Power often exploits these fears. Love stays at your side through the darkest night.

Thanks for the very thoughtful post, Pam. I think, most people who spread fear, are doing so in order to support an agenda that they hope to see come to fruition. Usually, those agendas are in support of goals that would otherwise attract very few supporters. We have to look beyond fear and ask, why is this message being delivered?

That is one thing that I really dislike about elections – people slating the opposition, instead of stating what they believe in, and being positive about the reforms they want to make. Fear mongering gets us nowhere.
    Good post 🙂
