Do you feel entitled?
” . . .believing oneself to be inherently deserving
of privileges or special treatment.”
There are so many things that we have that we take for granted but do we deserve them? Short answer yes and no. There are things written in law that if we attain ‘ this’ we are entitled to ‘that’. That’s a good thing for a community, a society. But there are those who believe that they are entitled to more simply because they are alive. And that is both sad and annoying.
There will always be those who believe they deserve more than anyone else. There will always be those who don’t take what they deserve simply because they don’t want to be greedy. I think most of us are in between those two. But what are we entitled to?
It would be easy to say fresh air and clean water but even those come with a cost. There are people in this world that don’t have access to either. Don’t they deserve as much as we do? They do, but in this day and age we have to work to attain fresh air and clean water and then maintain them. And sometimes we don’t work hard enough. Or we do and others sabotage our efforts for reasons of ignorance and greed.
By virtue of my birth I am lucky enough to live in a country that believes I am entitled to assistance because I have a disability. I appreciate that, every day. Unfortunately there are those who think they too should be ‘entitled’ because . . . because . . . they’re lazy and greedy! There are so many abuses of the system that it is in danger of collapsing. I don’t think it ever will but it is strained. And there are those who deserve the help and are finding it difficult to get.
There are more than 7 billion people in the world and each one is an individual. I have beliefs and customs that are mine and I have no right to enforce them on another. Nor do they have the right to enforce their beliefs on me. Even if we disagree. I am a big Star Trek fan and one of the most sacred tenets in the series is ‘The Prime Directive’. I think we should all take note of it:
The Prime Directive is a guiding principle
prohibiting one group from interfering with the internal development of others.
This conceptual law prohibits using superior technology
to impose their own values or ideals on others.
I think we need to listen.
I’m a Star Trek fan, too, and laughed at how easily Kirk ignored the prime directive.
You have a lot of insights written into this post. 🙂

Terrific post Pam. When something nice comes to me, I always feel embarrassed and guilty that I’m getting something I don’t deserve.
I know people, some in my own family, who absolutely feel they are entitled to the good life. Then there’s that group, as you say, of lazy, greedy good-for-nothing’s who have learned how to work the system and receive all kinds of benefits they’re not entitled to. And they get away with it!! 😡😡 In the meantime, so many people who not only need help but deserve it, can’t get it. I don’t know how this system will ever get fixed.
I am not a big Star Trek fan, but I really like The Prime Directive.

This is a great post, Pam, but it touches a sore subject for me. I too often find myself dealing with “entitled” folk. People for whom more than most is still not enough. People who want something just because they think they should have it, or think they should have it, just because they want it. There are days I try to stay within the bounds of guidance I’ve received (like the Prime Directive) and there are days I wish I could set phasers on ‘stun’ and end the annoying behavior.

Sadly I find many of today’s youngsters feel entitled! They want something for nothing; certainly without having to work for it.
I do agree that clean water should be accessible to all, and basic rights and humanity. The more fortunate really ought to look out for those less fortunate.

I feel entitled!
I believe my two cents should be appreciated, and when possible utilized!
I believe I know what I’m talking about more than half the time, which leads me to firmly believe I should be heard!
I believe everyone should enjoy the same opportunity!
I believe everyone is entitled to feel warmth, appreciation, and enjoy a sense of value within their families, and larger communities.
I believe I’m entitled to enjoy a lifetime where the bad times do not outnumber the good times!
I believe greed is the agent of doom – it overpowers, destroys and alters the natural balance & co-existence of all things.
Moderation, compromise, and a firm understanding that our shared existence is a WE not a ME exercise.
Aren’t we all entitled to be happy?! I believe we are all entitled to that.

I believe that too. Which is why I work so hard to achieve it.

I’m beginning to think that the words “entitlement” and “privilege” have become just “buzz words” used in attempts to bully others and demand entitlement and privilege. How’s that for irony.
