When I was learning to quilt in the Appalachian mountains of Virginia, I heard the (possibly apocryphal) claim that early quilters often made a “humility square” with one mistake to remind them that only God was perfect. (Personally, my own quilts held so many mistakes that deliberate ones were never needed!)

I always thought purfection was caused be a cat scratch. And humility was made loose leaf preferably in a very slightly chipped cup.
